DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fitness Operations

  • Performs a variety of duties associated with instructing or leading fitness programs and classes.
  • Provides a safe, effective and supportive learning environment for diverse participants with varying skills and fitness levels.
  • Stays abreast of latest trends and techniques in areas of expertise. Evaluates class effectiveness and recommends new classes or techniques.
  • Ensures participants are performing exercises correctly and safely.
  • Uses knowledge and expertise to modify class activities for various participant skill levels.
  • Sets up and takes down required program equipment including exercise and audio equipment.

Administrative Duties

  • Plans class curriculum and conducts individualized or group instruction in areas of expertise. This may include selecting exercises, designing choreography, and creating music playlists.
  • Maintains program related records and reports, including accurate class attendance records.
  • Provides exceptional guest service to all participants. Responds to information requests, comments and complaints from participants.
  • Maintains frequent communications with other staff within the Community Center and Division and reports any issues or concerns with inventory, facility conditions, policies and incidents to supervisory staff as needed.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and trainings.

Other/Miscellaneous

  • Ensures the safety of guests and program participants by enforcing all rules and policies with staff and guests.
  • May be considered as a subject expert for area of specialization and may train other staff on specific knowledge.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

CPR/AED/First Aid

Group Instructor I

High School diploma or general education degree (GED)

One (1) year of experience teaching group fitness classes preferred

One nationally accredited group fitness certification (NASM, ACE, AFFA) or specialized fitness certification (Les Mils, Cycling, SilverSneakers, Barre, etc.)

or the ability to obtain a certification within six months of hire.

Ability to obtain CPR, AED and First Aid within three months of hire.

Group Instructor II

High School diploma or general education degree (GED)

Three (3) years of experience teaching group fitness classes preferred

One nationally accredited group fitness certification (NASM, ACE, AFFA) or one specialized fitness certification (Les Mils, Cycling, SilverSneakers, Barre, etc.)

CPR, AED and First Aid certification

Group Instructor III

High School diploma or general education degree (GED)

Six (6) years of experience teaching group fitness classes

  • One nationally accredited group fitness certification (NCSM, ACE, AFFA).

  • One specialized fitness certification (Les Mils, Cycling, SilverSneakers, Barre, etc.)

OR

  • A 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher Certification or a nationally recognized Pilates Reformer Certification with a minimum of the one-year teaching experience preferred

CPR, AED and First Aid certification

Group Instructor IV

Bachelor's degree and/or Master's Degree in exercise science, kinesiology, exercise physiology or other fitness field

Ten (10) years of experience teaching group fitness classes

  • One nationally accredited group fitness certification (NCSM, ACE, AFFA).

  • Two specialized fitness certifications (Les Mils, Cycling, SilverSneakers, Barre, etc.)

OR

  • A 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher Certification or a nationally recognized Pilates Reformer Certification with a minimum of five years teaching experience.

CPR, AED, and First Aid certification

A combination of education, experience, and certifications may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge of: To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate exceptional leadership and communication skills and must possess expert knowledge of the principles, practices, trends and methods of recreational fitness and wellness operations and programming in a community setting. Knowledge of guidelines and regulations related to Department, Town, County, State, and Federal policies and procedures also required.

Skills in: Initiative and decision-making; verbal and written communication; supervision, leadership, and interpersonal relationships; basic financial methods of recreational programming; outstanding customer service to a diverse population; administrative functions; time management, meeting deadlines, responding to internal and external requests in a timely manner; the use of standard office equipment, computers, and various software programs; positive and professional working relationships with all Town staff and the community; conflict resolution; handling controversial issues; comprehending instruction, correspondence, and policies and procedures; problem solving; remaining composed in emergency situations and working effectively under stressful circumstances; performing CPR, First Aid, and AED to level of certification.

Physical Factors:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will spend varying amounts of time walking, standing, and sitting. Often required to bend over, kneel, and stoop down to the floor multiple times throughout shift. Occasional tasks require grasping, lifting, and handling of exercise equipment. The employee will need to reach for objects above and below the shoulders, push and pull objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Tasks require the employee to spend minimal amounts of time on repetitive motion tasks.

Environmental Factors:

Work is performed indoors, in a gym environment. The employee will be required to communicate with clients while performing multiple tasks. Tasks require adequate vision to spot incorrect forms in clients and adjust. Tasks will involve moderate noise levels.
