Position classification

Hybrid -- Job duties and expectations allow for onsite and remote work scheduled every week. Employees in this classification are regularly scheduled onsite one (1) to four (4) days per week based on the County needs and as determined by Department Director. Hybrid classified roles can be onsite more than the set minimum based on employee preference.

What Success Looks Like In This Job

To perform fundamental accounting duties in the Finance Department, by applying accounting principles and concepts, including preparation of journal entries, reconciliations, financial reports, financial projects and analyses and other related projects.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Review and verify accounts receivable, cash receipts, and accounts payable batches and transactions for accuracy
  • Work with Grant Analysts and Coordinator to ensure financial reporting for grants is accurate and timely
  • Conduct monthly general ledger reviews and analyses
  • Prepare monthly journal entries, and reconciliations of balance sheet accounts, for month-end closing process
  • Compile, maintain, and prepare financial data, reports and schedules
  • Prepare periodic reports for assigned department(s)/office(s)
  • Analyze and recommend improvements to accounting processes
  • Participate in year-end general ledger closing process, preparation for the County's annual audit and the County's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)
  • Provide support to the Finance Department staff and grant analysts
  • Maintain and classify capital assets in the related system module
  • Perform annual inventory count and/or physical inventory of capital assets
  • Serve as a contact for County departments/offices for any accounting-related questions
  • Attend accounting and grant related training regularly to stay current with accounting principles and practices
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications for Success

Knowledge of:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Skills to:
  • Apply and interpret accounting principles such as revenue recognition, matching, etc. to properly account for and code financial transactions
  • Prepare and analyze a variety of financial statements and reports
  • Maintain automated financial systems (JDEdwards preferred)
  • Continue to learn and apply governmental accounting concepts, accounting processes, and other requirements
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations and schedules
  • Research, identify and correct errors and in financial transactions
  • Prioritize assignments and meet scheduled deadlines
Ability to:
  • Learn, research, and apply accounting principles to a variety of accounting transactions
  • Learn, research, and apply federal, state, and local laws and regulations to the County's processes
  • Prepare financial reports, statements and reports, including the CAFR
  • Communicate professionally, clearly, and concisely
  • Establish, maintain, and foster professional, positive, and harmonious working relationships with elected officials, peers, third-party vendors, customers, auditors and residents of the County
  • Work outside of scheduled hours during busy periods, such as year-end closing / CAFR preparation periods

More Qualifications for Success

  • Experience: 0-2 years – of professional, general, accounting experience. Governmental accounting experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Education and Training: Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred. An Associate's Degree may account for 2 of the required years of experience. A Bachelor's Degree may account for 4 years of the required years of experience. Governmental accounting course(s) are preferred, but not required.
  • License or Certificate: None.
  • Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.
